Scripts and Systems - call for entries

Type: Exhibition Opportunities [View all]
Posted by: Lexington Art League
Deadline: 04/13/12

May 25 – July 15, 2012

Many of our daily and most menial tasks have been reduced to orderly algorithms - a discrete set of steps, rules, or calculations followed in specific order to accomplish a task. With improving technology, we are personally responsible for fewer of these steps.

Scripts and Systems is an exhibition about these plans and plots. It is about letting go of control - even in our creative lives. It is about the relationship between people and our machines, about whom we give instruction to and whom we take it from. It is about all of the scripts we follow.

Artists interested in submitting work for consideration are encouraged to creatively interpret the theme. Works in all media are eligible.

For full prospectus, please visit http://www.lexingtonartleague.org/calltoartist.htm and look under "Scripts and Systems."

Deadline: 04/12/12

The City of Cassano d'Adda, Milan - Italy, presents Ecoismi2012, a contemporary art event which takes place in the Natural Park of the Island Borromeo. The common thread of Ecoismi 2012 is between man and nature. The review involves the construction of No. 12 (twelve) site-specific works in complete harmony with the area of the park.

ECOISMI 2012's leitmotiv is the binomial man and nature. The exhibition schedules the realization of twelve (n° 12) artistic works in full harmony with the identity of the Natural Park area. ECOISMI 2012 wants to be a meeting point between contemporary culture and the deep roots of territory. The art works realized have to be able to create a natural and osmotic relationship between art, the environmental and cultural context, and the identity of local site and will have an aesthetic and cognitive value, regarding processes and changes that concern the environment and the present human condition. Mechanical Turk Review of My Art: #4

This is a project where I pay workers on Amazon's Mechanical Turk to review my art and website and pay them $5 dollars for 500 words. This is the fourth review I've received:

Complicated Simplicity: The saying, “A picture is worth a thousand words” may be a tad cliche. However, after reviewing the artwork that is spotlighted on Paul Shortt's website, this popular idiom rang truer than ever before. Not only does this art possess a clear artistic vision, it draws out the satirical simplicity of contemporary life and allows its viewers to interact. With an emphasis on realism and modernity, the artwork that Paul Shortt features is nothing less of outstanding. In particular, I was taken aback by the featured work entitled, “Corner Piece”, which is an image of a black folded plaque, one side reading, “Put your hands behind your back” and the other, “Then put your head down”. The caption states that, “This sign directs the participant into time out, while the sign is conforming to the space.” Immediately following the caption there is a picture of a woman making use of the sign. While I understand the artist's intention for this piece, I was able to gain my own unique interpretation. The artwork by itself is as powerful, if not more powerful, standing alone. Primarily, my interpretation of the piece made me reflect on law enforcement. I pictured a cop telling someone to put their hands behind their back and then to subsequently put their head down. Obviously, police officers do not usually tell their suspects to put their head down. Therefore, I took these words as a statement about the shame that is imbedded in nonconformity. I always see criminal suspects lower their heads. This piece spoke to me, acknowledging the disgrace which is inherent in violating the law. I was ecstatic that I was able to gain my own interpretation of the artwork. After all, art is an individual expression and should always be unique to the individual who creates it as well as the individual who interprets it. This, in my opinion, is the nature of true artwork: that it is able to be interpreted and reinterpreted countless times without losing its intensity. Moreover, much of the art that is featured on Mr. Shortt's website speaks volumes concerning life as we have come to know it. From the photograph entitled, “ROFL CON”, which makes a play on new-age text lingo, to the piece called, “Seeking Good Conversation”, which simply depicts a person holding a cell phone, this artwork is both modern and uncomplicated. For a beginning art enthusiast, uncomplicated artwork is sought after. There is no pretense, no pomp and no arrogance in the art that Paul Shortt displays and this is certainly appreciated. For, one is better able to discern the deeper meaning behind an artistic piece when the artists themselves are not seeking to complicate the concept. What's more, many of the artistic representations that Paul Shortt presents are interactive. Not only are the viewers allowed to interpret the art intellectually, they are often asked to physically participate in the art's action. For instance, the piece “ROFL CON” allows viewers to roll around on the red carpet that the text lingo is printed on. This makes for a more entertaining involvement with the artwork and, undoubtedly, leaves viewers feeling personally related to the piece itself. In reference to interactive and entertaining art, the piece called “Strap-on Ballsacks” is hilarious. The name speaks for itself. There are images that show random people, women and men, wearing colorful strap-on testicles. I never knew that raw artistic photography could be so humorous. There is a vast array of interpretations which can be concluded from this piece alone, and as wonderful as it is to interpret art, I must admit that I would love to get the opportunity to wear those strap-on ballsacks. They look like a lot a fun. In retrospect, the artist deemed certain artistic videos, “It's Simple but Complicated” and I have found that these words actually convey the nature of Paul Shortt's entire art collection. Much like the saying, “a picture is worth a thousand words”-- which, as a hackneyed phrase, has greater depth than initially realized-- Paul Shortt's art compilation is fairly simple and yet, possesses a more intricate plot than first perceived. After reviewing the artwork that is spotlighted on Paul Shortt's website, one is able to grasp the very value and significance of complicated simplicity.

WHITE
Projekt30
(NYC NY)
WHITE

What artist hasn't gazed at a blank canvas filled with dread? Even when white is not emanating from an empty canvas, it is still one of the most difficult colors for an artist to utilize. All mediums are welcome, and the artwork need not be literally white.

The exhibition will be publicized to our extensive list of galleries, collectors, etc, all contributors receive great exposure. As of Nov. 2011 over 300,000 messages have been sent to previous participants. Projekt30 is an organization dedicated to promoting artists. We provide websites for 100s of artists, and since 2003 have conducted over 120 juried exhibitions, featured the artwork of 1,000s of artists, and facilitated the sale of 1,000s of artworks.

Deadline April 2, 2012.
Opens April 24, 2012.
$35 Entry fee, free for Projekt30 members.

DownStreet Art is a public art project designed to revitalize downtown North Adams. A post-industrial city in the Berkshire Hills of Massachusetts, North Adams first began its cultural revitalization with the opening of the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA) in 1999. More than ten years later, the city is in its second wave of economic development through the arts and other creative economy businesses.

By harnessing existing arts organizations and events and transforming vacant and open spaces into arts destinations, DownStreet Art defines North Adams as a cultural haven, driving tourists and community members’ downtown in a four month celebration of the arts. Since its inception in 2008, over 65,000 visitors came downtown and through the doors of DownStreet Art’s galleries and exhibits. For DownStreet Art 2012 our goal is to build on what we have accomplished to date while deepening the dialogue between our community and the arts. DownStreet Art gives artists and curators competitive opportunities to exhibit their work and to be promoted on a national and international level.

Context:

On a rainy evening on February 26, shortly after 7pm, Trayvon Martin spoke his last words…pleas for help and screams of mercy. He died a brutal death at the hands of George Zimmerman, a self-appointed neighborhood patrolman who decided that 17-year old Trayvon looked suspicious. Trayvon’s crime – he was young, a male and Black. Trayvon was wearing a hoodie and took a break from watching an NBA All-Star game to go to the local convenience store for a pack of skittles and an iced tea. Justice for Travyon’s death has been the outcry for the Black community At-large. However, less than several months ago, this same community was up in arms over the legal execution of another young Black man, Troy Davis. To date, Black men have suffered a long history of violence as a result of distorted stereotyping and created from the institutional establishment of mis-leading images perpetuated by mass media. From the advent of D.W. Griffith’s Birth of A Nation, to the constant bombardment of negative images of Black men and boys in the news, videos, newspapers and magazines, this imagery has perpetuated antagonistic attitudes and behaviors towards this demographic, which has innumerably resulted in death. From early 20th century lynchings to more recent killings by police, many lives have been lost as a direct and indirect result of racist stereotyping of Black men.

RELEVANCE:

CCCADI is committed to upholding a tradition of arts and activism. In the same manner in which Ida B. Wells-Barnett fought feverishly against lynchings and W.E.B. du Bois urged artists to use their talent for the sake of propaganda, our institution encourages artists to use their voices to contribute to the empowerment of our communities. In response to Travyon Martin’s recent unwarranted murder and the consequences of being Black and male in America, we invite artists to join us in raising critical awareness in the demand for justice and the fight to end the criminalization of Black men that is an apparent result of racial stereotyping. In a recent report conducted by The Opportunity Agenda entitled “Media Representations and the Impact on the Lives of Black Men and Boys,” a direct correlation was made between the portrayal in media of Black men and boys and how resulting effects on society of these images ,lowers their life expectancy. Given the nature of this epidemic throughout history, from the countless lynchings of Black men and boys, the brutal murders of unarmed men by the police, and the prosecution and imprisonment of others, this exhibition seeks to confront stereotypes, address engage critical analysis and engage activism. Additionally, as an institution, we stand in solidarity with all of the families throughout the U.S. who are still grieving the lost lives of their sons. H(A)UNTED seeks to confront mainstream messaging and visual culture’s bombardment of negative images that stereotype Black men. It also seeks to address what happens in the aftermath of the horrendous results of racial stereotyping. Lastly, this exhibition will provide a platform for artists to speak challenge the status quo in attempts to shift the ideological and behavioral paradigms that currently dictate the livelihood of Black men and boys in our society.

The parks have always welcomed artistic interpretations in support of land advocacy. Thomas Moran’s evocative and astounding paintings directly influenced the establishment of our first National Park (Yellowstone, 1872). This tradition continues today with more than 50 Artist-in-Residence programs throughout the National Park Service system.

The Artist-in-Residence Program offers professional artists the opportunity to spend three weeks on either the North or South Rim of Grand Canyon in housing provided by the National Park Service. The North Rim AiR program is seasonal, with six residencies during the spring, summer, and fall. The South Rim AiR program is year-round, providing twelve artist opportunities.

Grand Canyon National Park’s Artist-in-Residence Program seeks artists whose work is engaged in issues that are relevant to the Park Interpretative Themes, while challenging the visitor to become an active participant in preservation and environmental and cultural advocacy. We are pleased to host artists who communicate complex and contemporary issues through their chosen medium. Artists in all genres and in all disciplines, contemporary, traditional, or folk who have a genuine interest in contributing to our on-going national discussion on these issues will be of special interest to our program.

The Chinati Foundation's Artist in Residence program

The Chinati Foundation's Artist in Residence program was instituted in 1989 with the aim of supporting the development of artists of diverse ages, backgrounds, and disciplines. To date, the Chinati Foundation has hosted more than 75 artists from more than fifteen countries in its residency program.

The Artist in Residence program provides an opportunity for artists from around the world to work in a striking, natural environment. Exhibitions are often held at the conclusion of the residency. These become an important part of the museum's temporary exhibition program, and provide a vital counterpoint to the permanent collection.

The Chinati Foundation provides a furnished apartment on the museum's grounds and a studio in Marfa. Resident artists have unlimited access to Chinati's collection and archive, and the museum staff and interns are available to assist in securing materials and preparing exhibitions. A stipend of $1,000 is provided to assist with travel and art materials.

The Chinati Foundation maintains a casual environment, and it is up to the artists to develop their own work schedule. Marfa is a small town in a sparsely populated area of far West Texas, and artists may spend a great deal of time alone. A residency at Chinati is ideal for those artists who seek a quiet and sympathetic environment with few distractions. The average residency lasts two to three months; this can be adjusted according to individual needs and the resources of the museum.

The 2011 and 2012 resident artists have been chosen.

Summer Residency Program for Artists and Thinkers
The School of Making Thinking
(Roscoe NY)
Application deadline: April 1, 2012

LOCATION: The Yellow House B&B (near Roscoe, NY)

Program dates:

Session A June 1, 2012 – June 30, 2012

Session B July 2, 2012 – July 15, 2012

Session C July 16, 2012 – July 30, 2012

The School of Making Thinking (SMT) is a summer residency program in The Catskills where artists and academics think, create, and live together in a communal setting. SMT’s mission is to create a unique environment where participants are able to create original work that challenges disciplinary conventions of art-making and thinking. Our program asks: How does art deepen thought and provoke questioning? And how is thinking enacted through creative mediums? By bringing artists and academics together in an interdisciplinary space, SMT seeks to blur the line between these two conventionally distinct practices and to challenge the limits of each.

The School of Making Thinking sets itself apart from traditional residency programs in three important respects. First, SMT participants hail from a far more diverse range of disciplines. Our alumni are botanists, dancers, playwrights, painters, poets, philosophers, fiction writers, audio documentarians, filmmakers, performance artists, and PhD candidates from English and American Studies departments. Second, collaboration is an essential component of each participant’s project. Third, SMT is a school in which participants teach and learn from one another.
