Call for Proposals

22 is a new multi-use creative space on in Berwyn, just west of downtown Chicago.  The goal of 22 is twofold: to showcase the work of emerging and established artists and designers from within the Chicago area, and to bring innovative and informative work to our community from the rest of the world. To reach these goals, 22 functions as a design studio during the day and as a flexible art space the rest of the time. This flexibility allows 22 to serve as a venue for gallery exhibitions, markets, installations, performances, lectures, and so on.

After five successful gallery shows this year, 22 will be transitioning into a small retail space for the summer months.  We still want to combine this retail space with gallery events, and this is where we’re looking for your proposals.

We’re interested in a variety of events ranging from site specific-installations, performances, musical events, book signings, lectures, receptions, and so on. We’re opening up our studio to your ideas. If you’re working on a new body of work, an ongoing project, or a new avenue of research, this is a great chance to show it off. Bear in mind that we are a relatively new gallery and, as such, we can’t guarantee a large audience. In other words, we’re not going to be able to make you famous -- we’re looking for people who want to do this so that they gain something valuable from the experience for themselves.

The total studio space is 18’ wide x 50’ long with 10’ ceilings. However, considering that this space is also used as a working design studio and small retail store, approximately 18’ x 30’ will be available to use for events. If your proposal is accepted we will work with you to be able to maximize our space for your needs, and we will work together to figure out the best methods for preparation, installation, etc.

We believe that the studio is best-suited for one-night events. Therefore, use of the space begins at $150 for a one night booking. 22 will help promote your event though our social media pages and our e-mail list. However since we are a new gallery, we would highly suggest that you promote it yourself as much as you can.

We are accepting proposals on a rolling deadline throughout the summer. Artists will be notified within two weeks of submission if their proposal is chosen. While we will be accepting submissions throughout the summer, the schedule might fill up quickly, so the earlier you submit your proposal, the more likely you are to be chosen.

Submission requirements:

Artist name(s) and contact information (e-mail, phone number)

A written description of your proposal for the 22 space -- How will it fit in the studio? What size is it? What specific requirements will you need for installation, presentation, electrical connections, etc.?

3-8 pictures (if applicable)

Preferred dates.

E-mail submissions to 22berwyn@gmail.com

Submitting a proposal does not guarantee that your proposal will be selected.

Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site is currently accepting proposals for its 2013 season of site-specific artist installations. Maximum funding is $7,500 per project. The deadline for proposals is June 13, 2012.

For guidelines, helpful hints, and FAQs, visit our site:

Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site, an abandoned prison museum located in Philadelphia, hosts a changing series of artist installations as part of its annual programming. Artists are chosen for their ability to address Eastern State’s primary themes—including issues of crime and justice, architectural history, and the site’s fascinating past—with a memorable, thought-provoking approach.

Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site was once the most famous and expensive prison in the world, but stands today in ruin, a haunting world of crumbling cellblocks and empty guard towers. Known for its grand architecture and strict discipline, this was the world’s first true “penitentiary,” a prison designed to inspire penitence, or true regret, in the hearts of convicts. Its vaulted, sky-lit cells once held many of America’s most notorious criminals, including bank robber Willie Sutton and Al Capone. Tours today include the cellblocks, solitary punishment cells, Al Capone’s Cell, and Death Row. A critically-acclaimed series of artist installations is free with admission.

Artist-in-Residence: Catoctin Mountain Park

Call Type: Residencies, Workshops, Exchanges
Deadline Type: fixed
Deadline: 6/15/2012
Eligibility: Chicago
The very first suggestion of a "nation's park" came from artist George Catlin in 1832. Artists have always played a vital role in preserving our nation's treasures. Catoctin Mountain Park and the Catoctin Forest Alliance support this tradition today through the Artist-In-Residence program.

Artists help our national parks with their root mission: conservation and enjoyment. Historic records and technical drawings may help preserve the nuts and bolts of a national park, while the hand of an artist will preserve the park's soul. The artist's work draws the public closer to the park's resources, so that they enjoy it on a deeper level and help to preserve it.

Mission Statement: The Catoctin Mountain Artist-In-Residence (AIR) program, under the auspices of the Catoctin Forest Alliance, offers visual, literary, and performing artists an opportunity to work in a natural and historic setting to advance art, nature, and history education and appreciation.
Program Overview
The Artist-In-Residence will spend two weeks immersed in the natural and cultural resources of the Catoctin Mountains. During this residency, the artist will produce a novel work and share the artistic process with the public.

The Catoctin Forest Alliance conservation area (namely: Catoctin Mountain and areas within two miles of its base, from the Pennsylvania border to the edge of Frederick) boasts many compelling subjects. Here the artist may find many historic sites, farms, quaint villages, rivers and streams, waterfalls, lakes, and other scenic views. Beneath the attractive scenery lies a wealth of modern social subjects: development and conservation, wildlife restoration, suburban sprawl, poverty and affluence, disappearing traditions, ethnic diversity, and plenty more.
